Kaskazi Sail Rig

This specially developed Delta rig for Kaskazi kayaks is indispensable for long passage making and expedition use in addition to fun days on the water. The rig is fully collapsible and can be carried furled in adverse wind and sea conditions. The sail can be set to provide minimum power, even when the wind is in excess of 20 knots. It is not recommended that you use the sail in winds of greater than 25 knots.

The central pivot point allows the sail to be set at any angle. Where other kayak sails would have lost the wind and started to flap, the Kaskazi Delta Rig will continue to provide lift. It is even possible to sail slightly upwind.

The 1.6 m2 sail can generate enough power to push you along faster than normal paddling speeds. The advantage is that it is still manageable in strong winds and it does not interfere with your paddling strokes. In light winds, or paddling upwind, there is minimal wind resistance to overcome and the benefit gained in use far outweighs any negatives. With the sail flat overhead it is in neutral and can act as a very useful sunshade.

To utilise the sail simply angle it downwards by pulling on the fore sheet, ease off the side sheets and cleat them off in the cleat block that comes as part of the rig. You are now sailing downwind. By angling the sail according to the wind direction you can use the power of the sail to assist your passage even slightly into the wind.

The kayak requires to be built to take the sail as it uses a proper mast step built into the kayak. This method of mounting spreads the load between the deck and keel line and prevents the local deck stresses caused by aftermarket sail systems. Kayak UK will happily custom build a kayak for you to take the sail rig, and occasionally we will have one in stock in our standard colour of white with red trim. The sail is suitable for the Skua, Duo, Pelican and Dorado.
